“Link” and “Zelda” 2017 Halloween Party Costume Contest Winners

Each year, Ben and I attend an annual Halloween Bash, hosted by our dear friends. Our friends go all out every year for this party, impressing with over-the-top decor and amazing food, drinks, and dancing. The most highly anticipated piece of the event is the Halloween costume contest.

As past winners of the contest (2017), we feel a particular pressure to make our costumes bigger and better each year. However, with working full-time, a toddler, and just managing everyday life, our Halloween costume just wasn’t at the top of our minds this year. The week of the annual Halloween party arrived, and we still didn’t have our costume planned.

“Changes in latitude. Changes in attitude.” – Jimmy Buffet

Our friends from out of town joining us for the party this year invited us to dress up as Jimmy Buffet Parrot Heads with them. If you’re not familiar with the famous musicians fandom, a “Parrot Head,” simply stated, is someone who is a fan of Jimmy Buffet’s music. A Parrot Head can also be someone who adopts Jimmy Buffet’s lifestyle of living life the fullest, without worrying what tomorrow will bring.

“If there’s a heaven for me, I’m sure it has a beach attached.”

Jimmy Buffet passed away this past Labor Day weekend – just a little more than two months after my dad. Both my dad and Ben’s dad are big fans of his music. Ben and I have seen him twice in concert – once when we were college, and again after we were married with Ben’s extended family. The Halloween party was one of my dad’s favorite events every year, so dressing up Parrot Head style felt right in more ways than one.

“If life gives you lemons, make margaritas!”

As Floridians, Ben and I already have a nice stash of “Beach wear” in our closets, so we were able to put our costumes together with things we already had. However, I picked up a few things from Amazon to truly transform into Parrot Heads! Here’s a full list of what we bought to create your own Parrot Head costume:

  1. Parrot Hat
  2. Inflatable Wearable Parrot
  3. Palm Tree Head Band
  4. Beach Balls
  5. Leis
  6. “Cheeseburger in Paradise” Hat
