Round Top Round Up

This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the P.I.N.K. Creatives Retreat, featuring Sara McDaniel (@simplysoutherncottage) and Wendy Conklin (@chairwhimsy). The retreat took place in Round Top, Texas, a little town about an hour outside of Austin. I had never heard of Round Top before, but quickly fell in love with its rustic charm. If the city’s famous vintage and antique shopping opportunities are on your list, here are some things you need to know before you go!

How to Get There

Round Top does have a small regional airport, however, it’s much easier to fly to Austin, and then rent a car for a short hour and fifteen minute drive into town. Houston is also well-within driving distance. I was surprised at how hilly Texas is, and the rolling pastures provided a nice view along the way. Having your own vehicle will help you traverse the different shops, as everything is a bit spread out.

Where to Stay

The Frenchie Boutique Hotel Breakfast Room

We stayed at the Frenchie Boutique Hotel situated just outside of downtown Round Top. This renovated 1890s farmhouse and cottage serves as a great spot for a girls’ retreat, with its aesthetically pleasing decor and abundant amenities.

Another great boutique hotel to check out is the Wander Inn, owned and operated by the world-famous Junk Gypsies. Each room has its own story and unique details, with personal hand-crafted touches by the gypsies themselves. From a copper-and-gold, claw-footed tub, to a floor-to-ceiling photo of shirtless Brad Pitt, each room is unique and wonderful in its own way.

Things to Do

Apparel available at the Junk Gypsy

By far, the most popular thing to do in little old Round Top is shopping the plethora of antique and vintage markets there are to explore. We stopped by the Junk Gypsy, a sister team that’s known for designing Miranda Lambert’s famous “guns & wings” logo, where you can shop for home decor, apparel, boots, hand-made goods, and all kinds of fabulous junk!

The Original Round Top Antiques Fair brings thousands of patrons from around the world to shop 11 miles of vintage antiques along highway TX-237. The fair runs once every Fall, Winter, and Spring, with the Fall show scheduled for late October.

Round Top with its boutique hotels and vintage attractions is full of “Instagram-able” opportunities. So, dress the part! Temperatures can reach up to 90 degrees in the summer and early fall, so think light and airy pieces that photograph well. I love this smocked dress that comes in a plethora of colors and patterns. Pair it with some fun oversized sunglasses. Don’t forget the cowgirl boots! Or, try a jumpsuit for a full all-in-one look. An empire-waist, wide-legged jumpsuit is flattering for all sizes.

Famous Texas Longhorns are permanent guests at the Wander Inn.

Next week, I’m back on the road and heading to Charleston, SC. Let me know where I should go in the comments! I can’t wait to take you all along with me!
